Entry rules are not the memorable part of a trip to Yunnan, but they decide whether the trip can happen at all. The difficulty is rarely the form itself. It is choosing the right entry route and checking information that may have changed since an old article or forum post was written.
Most holiday visitors travel with a tourist visa, enter under a current visa-free agreement, or use 240-hour visa-free transit on the way to a third country or region. Work out which applies before booking.
This guide was checked in September 2026. Entry policies change, sometimes with fixed end dates, so confirm your own nationality, passport and travel purpose with an official Chinese embassy, consulate, visa centre or the National Immigration Administration before departure.
Start with your passport and purpose of travel
Check the passport you will use, not just your nationality. Different passport types and travel purposes can receive different treatment.
Match the policy to the purpose and length of the visit. A holiday, family visit and international transit may qualify differently; paid work and long-term study require their own approval.
Your passport needs enough validity and space for the trip. Visa centres commonly ask tourist applicants for at least six months of remaining validity, but check the office handling your application.
Travelling with a tourist visa
The L visa is the usual category for tourism in mainland China. Applications generally require a form, passport, photograph and trip evidence such as flight and hotel bookings, or an eligible invitation letter. Procedures depend on the office responsible for your place of residence.
Apply with an itinerary you can explain clearly. You do not need to list every café or afternoon walk, but your arrival, departure and main overnight stops should make sense together. Use the same spelling of your name throughout your passport, bookings and application.
Allow time for an extra document request, public holiday or busy period, while following the application window given by your local office.
Visa-free entry for an ordinary visit
China currently allows eligible ordinary-passport holders visa-free short stays for purposes including tourism. Some arrangements are time-limited; others come from mutual agreements.
Check that the current policy covers your passport, dates, purpose and length of stay. An announcement may have an expiry date.
Keep departure and accommodation evidence available even when a visa is not required. Local registration rules still apply after arrival.
Using 240-hour visa-free transit
The transit policy is useful for an eligible traveller continuing from one country or region to another through China. It is not a general ten-day visa waiver for a return trip between the same two places.
The journey must show onward movement: origin, eligible Chinese entry point, then a third country or region. You need a valid travel document and confirmed onward ticket; nationality, entry port and permitted stay area also matter.
Yunnan has designated entry points under the policy, including Kunming Changshui International Airport, Lijiang Sanyi International Airport, Mohan railway and highway port, and Hekou highway port in the current National Immigration Administration list. Do not assume that every airport or land border can issue temporary entry, or that the permitted travel area is unlimited. Check the latest port and stay-area table before arranging an open-jaw flight or cross-border rail journey.
If an onward ticket is cancelled or changed, ask the airline and immigration authorities whether the route still qualifies.
Before the flight or border crossing
Keep the following together, on your phone and offline where possible:
- Passport and valid visa, if required
- Confirmed arrival and departure bookings
- First accommodation name, address and telephone number
- A simple outline of the Yunnan itinerary
- Travel insurance details
- Copies of important documents stored separately from the originals
China introduced an online arrival-card service for foreign visitors in November 2025. It is available through official National Immigration Administration channels and is free. Paper arrival cards remain available at ports. Avoid websites charging a fee to submit what looks like an official arrival form.
Allow extra connection time if you must collect luggage, change terminals or complete temporary-entry formalities.
Accommodation registration after arrival
A hotel normally handles temporary residence registration at check-in. Ensure the booking name matches your passport.
If you stay in a private home or accommodation that does not complete hotel registration, the host and guest generally need to register with the local public security authority within 24 hours. Ask the host about this before arrival. Keep the registration record, particularly if you later need help with a visa extension or replacement document.
Carry the original passport used for bookings; it is needed for domestic flights, trains and hotel check-in.
A final check before you book
Before paying for non-refundable arrangements, confirm:
- the entry policy is valid on your travel dates;
- your passport type and nationality are eligible;
- your travel purpose and length of stay are covered;
- a transit itinerary continues to a qualifying third destination;
- your entry port can process the policy you intend to use; and
- your accommodation details are ready for the arrival card and registration.
If one part is unclear, ask the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for your place of residence, or contact the National Immigration Administration service line. A short official answer is worth more than several confident but outdated travel posts.

Tourist-visa applications commonly require itinerary evidence such as flight and hotel reservations, but local procedures differ. Follow the checklist issued by the visa centre handling your application and favour changeable bookings when practical.
Is a return ticket acceptable for 240-hour visa-free transit?
A simple return to the place from which you entered normally does not show transit to a third country or region. The complete ticketed route matters, including connections. Confirm the itinerary with the airline and immigration authority before travel.
Can I complete the arrival card when I land?
